In the latest round of “Doesn’t he have something more important to work on?” a Senator is making a professional sport more important than the war in Iraq, the deficit, the Katrina debacle, the un-ending war on terror, the CIA leak, the looming crisis surrounding pension defaults, the continuing growth in the number of middle-class Americans without health insurance, and the corruption within the Congress itself.
This time it is over Terrell Owens, the misanthropic receiver who was suspended for four games and benched for the remainder of the season by the Philadelphia Eagles for conducting a campaign of disrespect, derision, and duplicity in an effort to extort a new contract. The NFL Players Association appealed on Mr. Owens’ behalf and was handed a 38 page ruling from the Arbitrator that vindicated the Eagles organization and lambasted Mr. Owens and his agent for their behavior.
Now Senator Arlen Spector, representing the state of Pennsylvania and Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee says that was unfair, that Mr. Owens should be allowed to play, and that by locking him out of the season and not permitting him to seek a trade to another team, the Eagles are being vindictive. Huh? Really, hasn’t this guy got enough on his plate dealing with real issues?
This is as bad as the Senate making inquiries into Baseball’s rules on steroids. It is simply asinine to suggest that all the other more important things that the SENATE of the UNITED STATES is supposed to be doing are done and they have time for this kind of petty, junior-high school, juvenile side-show. This is the Senate for God’s sake; the senior chamber; the sober, stiff upper lip of the American Republic. Your inappropriate antics are limited to boinking staffers, taking bribes, and dueling with pistols at first light along the Potomac. Pull it together man!
