iTunes update redux

So as I was installing the upgrade to iTunes 4.9 this morning (with all the associated non-background actions it requires) I noticed something strange – a system restart is required after the installation. It made me reflect on how odd a system restart requirement is in the Linux / UNIX world for a userspace software application.

I wondered, as my iBook cycled, if Apple was falling into one the very behaviors that have made Microsoft the object of scorn and disdain – integrating its media player into the operating system.

It created a strange diametric as I had just been pondering the flexibility of Apple to take something (podcasting) that less than six months ago was a quirky early-adopter meta-hack into something that was part of the most popular mobile digital music platform in the world. Talk about harnessing time-economics to cross the chasm at full speed.

Just an odd clash of thoughts
