Will someone please explain to me how “unattended luggage may present a security threat” when that luggage has already been screened at the security checkpoint and when all access to the passenger terminals is controlled, monitored, and tallied so that no “untrusted persons” have the ability to circumvent the security checkpoint?

It just annoys the hell out of me when you have to schlep your gear around when you want to visit the garbage can, the restroom, or the newsstand.
